Teams that you cannot take lightly include:
- Those that have been off for seven days.
- Those that have a bottom-three power play AND penalty kill.
- Those at the bottom of the division.
The Springfield Falcons are all of those. And they lead 2-0 after one period.
Laurent Dauphin and Greg Carey scored on the Falcons’ first two consecutive chances with the man advantage, moments after Justin Peters made two big saves on Carey and Eric Selleck.
The penalty kill had to work once, on a tripping call against Michael Bunting. The Falcons blocked several Bears chances.
And, at the other end, the Falcons committed turnover after turnover under pressure, but Niklas Treutle was there every single time.
The score is not indicative of how well the Bears played that period. They’ve had tremendous scoring chances and will capitalize if they keep this up.
After all, the team leads the league with 63 goals scored in second periods this season.
